Book: Conqueror: A Novel of Kublai Khan by Conn Igguldun. Igguldun's Mongol series have been my favorite series of books I have read in the last year. The journey of a bunch of disorganized tribesmen subsisting day-to-day to become the scourge of nations and a fantastically wealthy bureaucratic empire in one generation is fascinating, and masterfully and compellingly related by Igguldun. Court politics and civil strife continue in this book, as Kublai rises in influence but is discounted as little more than a Chinese scholar by his more rugged and nomadic relatives. Until he shows up with cannons, of course.
Movie (home viewing): Flame and Citron (Danish). A moving look at the personal lives and sacrifices of civilians behind enemy lines who put themselves in the business of killing Nazis.
Music: Symphonicities by Sting. A decent integration of classical and pop, but not as good as the London Symphony Orchestra's Kashmir: Symphonic Led Zeppelin.
Low point: Bad as Me by Tom Waits. While this CD had some interesting moments, it lacked an underlying stylistic tie to keep it moving as an album.

Satisfying Ending
So that is the ending of Downton Abbey, season 2. We are on the edge of our seats (and Mrs. P's lap) to find out what will happen in season 3. Many thanks to Auntie Bonnie for having us over each week to enjoy the unfolding drama. Until next time, Team DC!!

Where's Handsome?
Miss Meg came to see us today with her parents. While the Grown Ups were playing a very boring game the kids were enjoying the fire station and the puzzles. Edmund needed to nurse part way through the game, so I picked him up and grabbed my cover. I had him sucking away quite happily. His feet were sticking out from under the cover and wriggling away like always. Miss Meg was watching intently and after a moment asked, "Where's Handsome?" Her mother explained that he was having his dinner. She decided that was rather dull, so she went to read books. Eventually, Handsome finished eating and they were able to play again. Such a lark!

A Day Full of Edmund
He still loves his jumper.
He is learning to use the cup by himself.
It is rather a mess, but he has so much fun with it.
The fire station is instant fun on any day.
I think he likes posing for the camera.
Edmund likes to pull the station over onto himself, dumping out the contents along the way.
I love you, Handsome Man! You make life so much fun!

Cucumbers are for Ladies
Ann Marie & Bonnie brought us dinner this evening. They are so much fun.
We all laughed a great deal.
We let Edmund try a piece of cucumber. He was not not too keen on it.
So, we tried again.
Still no luck. He is Dad's boy after all.
But at least Auntie Bonnie made things better.

An Evening with Miss Meg
We trade children with Miss Meg's parents. This evening she came and visited with us while her parents went wherever it is that parents go without their offspring.
We played with the puzzles for quite some time. The cow puzzle in particular was fascinating to us.
After puzzles there was dinner. Meg and Edmund enjoyed sharing a piece of banana bread.
Meg enjoyed showing us the proper way to use a napkin, which is to hide behind it and play pee-a-boo.
Edmund liked his bread very much.
We ended the evening with some music. When Meg's parents arrived back they found us all relaxed, the toys mostly cleaned up, and cheerful music wafting round the house. I call that a successful night.
