Stuff of the Month! - January
Following the lead of our favorite caped avenger, I present the following brief look into the books, movies, music, and miscellany that cross my plate in an attempt to keep everyone abreast of a few details in our goings on.
Book of the month: Battle Cry of Freedom (Vol. 1) by James McPherson. It is easy to reach a point of civil war saturation in Virginia, and around certain crowds of people. This book was something of an antidote to that. McPherson's extensive treatment of the history leading up to the war (about a third of the way through this volume we were just beating Mexico) and how that shaped the issues and realities of life in 1861 were very interesting.
Movie of the month (theater): True Grit. Hard to argue with witty repartee, a serious premise, larger than life characters (especially Jeff Bridges and Barry Pepper), and a driving score by Carter Burwell. A worthy remake that respectfully reinterprets the John Wayne classic.
Movie of the month (DVD): The Sorcerer's Apprentice. From the Dukas-inspired score to decent computer effects to a real "what does it mean to become a man?" story line, this movie delivers a good time. It is in that growing field of children's movie tribute films which aren't really kid movies, but marketed to those who grew up on the originals.
Music of the month: Genius Loves Company with Ray Charles. The great keyboardist pairs up with a series of musicians to present a fun, easy to listen to CD. Many of the songs are remixes of popular songs, but the range of styles and integration of artistry makes for a fun listen.
Household project of the month: Painting. Everything. Fun of a new house.
Low point of the month: Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk by David Sedaris. Billed as a modern remake of Aesop, I couldn't finish it. I just don't need to read such a litany of whining over nothing, and such dubious moralization.
