This quote deals with conditions inside the Legation Quarter in Peking during the 55 days of the siege by the Boxers during the uprising from June to August of 1900.


"With some 1,293 Europeans to feed daily, the ration of horse meat was small. Many of the Europeans felt that mule meat was better than horse. And, some Europeans came to prefer horse meat to tinned meat.... Mrs. Gamewell wrote that "horse meat cut into steaks, covered with hot water, simmered for three hours; then browned in fat with added spices was quite tasty."1

Liberty Ball Modesty Strikes Again

[All Girls] Regarding the Liberty Ball

Dear ladies,

Last year, before the Liberty Ball, an appeal to modesty was sent to the ladies of this student body by two students who have since graduated. The thing was of monstrous length and provoked some controversy among those who read it (and many who did not). I wish to make a similar appeal, but with brevity. In short, I ask you, ladies, to be considerate of us young men when selecting what you will wear for the Ball. I'm sure you know what I mean, so I won't go into that. I have sisters, and so I realize how difficult finding a modest formal dress can be. You have my full sympathy and understanding. But I urge you to try.

Now, in my experience, appeals of this sort tend to go unheeded by those persons to whom they apply. Why, then, do I write? It is not to inflict unwarranted guilt on those who are more worthy of praise than of blame in the way they dress. Must I now employ tactics of shame? I fear that those who should be praised will feel guilt, and those worthy of reproof will be offended, but not repentant. I ask that you examine your hearts, but above all remember God's abundant grace.

Many young men have asked their sisters in Christ to the Liberty Ball and even paid for their tickets, out of brotherly affection and the desire to do a kindness to those they so respect and admire. Let their sisters respond with equal kindness and consideration!

Our intent is not to "get some" or to take advantage of you. We are--or should be--attempting to bless you. Perhaps the wisdom of inviting you to a social event which presents the temptation to lasciviousness might be questioned, as might as the value of an event which compels too many of you to spend unncessary time, money, and worry in finding an article of clothing which often ends up being less than decent. (And heav'n forbid that one should wear the same dress she wore last year!) But the Liberty Ball is custom, after all, and we ought not to to despise traditions. Let us instead seek to reform our participation in them.

I've said this before, but apparently, you need to hear it again...
wear a blindfold, dude.

Yes, Christian women should dress modestly. Yet, Christian men should
simultaneously respect women with their eyes. Jonathan and Ben wrote
last year "men are visually wired." This is not a defect of man. God
created women beautifully attractive, and he created men attracted to
the beauty of women. God also created man with self-control. The
entire burden of modesty should not be placed on women. Of all places,
the women of PHC are examples of modesty. If this is a serious issue
for you, consult your brothers for prayer. If women in dresses,
corporate casual attire, jeans and a t-shirt, sweater and jeans, etc.,
are causing any guys on campus to stumble, they need to wear
blindfolds.
