The Cherry Blossom Festival 2008

So, it all started out because Nick and Anita decided to come up and see the Cherry Blossoms. For those of you who have not yet met Anita, you are very much to be pitied. She is amazing!! We still cannot figure out what she is doing with Nick, but we will leave that up to Nick to ponder. In the meantime, we are so happy to have met her!

And then Ceil, R, & J decided to join the festivities. J&R biked into the very crowded city. We were all very envious, as we all had to cram - like the proverbial sardine - into the Metro. I like the DC Metro. However, I do not care for everyone's elbows in my back!

We met the crew at the Lincoln. It was a bit chilly. Ceil was wearing flipflops, but I was not brave enough.

You cannot see anything behind Jonathan's head, and since I was trying to take a picture of him it is ok. But it was very crowded all the way down the mall. And you can see little streams of people on all the avenues.

We hiked down to the Jefferson, where we met up with this dubious character. He fought his way out of the Smithsonian Metro to get to us. J & R tried to tell us that since they had never seen the Mason Memorial, it did not exist. Ceil made us walk all the way over to Mason Memorial, just to prove that it was there. We were getting tired at that point and just before the memorial came into view J & R relented, saying that they believed Ceil. Ceil let us stop and go back, but only after admonishing us that we could see the hedge over which was the memorial and we would have to see it on the way back. A shrubbery!!

Somehow the Sensei got cut out of the picture when the obliging tourist took our picture. Most profound apologies to his honourable self. NB: Nick's hat was rather askew. He did decide that he did not want to look quite as punk and moved it more center, see below.

Kissing. It is so pleasant. I did not do the princess-foot-popping thing at first... only after Nick insisted that we keep going for 3 shots worth of kissing. I mean, if you are going to get that many pictures of yourself "making out", you may as well have a little style.

Those trees are so interesting. They are such a DC sign of spring. For more historical info... try Google.

Nick tried to copy the foot-popping-thing, but it was rather silly on him, so I have excluded the shot. This is a much nicer one of him and Anita. Anyone who wants to experience the trauma of the foot-popping-Nick first hand, be forewarned and brace yourself!

After we connected with the Sensei, J had to take R home so she could work on a paper. We walked over to Chinatown to find some dinner. After several aborted efforts, each had a wait of an hour and a half or were closing in five minutes, we finally found a Potbelly's which had a wait of 7 minutes. We were so relieved to sit and eat that we all enjoyed milkshakes. If you have not been to Potbelly's for lunch get online and find the one closest to you and get yourself over there immediately for some great food.

Some of our newest converts to the Love of Potbelly's.

Ceil was trying to make her point, and I was more interested in getting picture of everyone. See the little cookies on the straw? I think it is a very fun idea. Ceil said that if the cookies would not fit on her finger she would not eat them. So, Nick ate it instead. Men will eat anything you know. After dinner Nick and Anita took themselves home to rest. The other four adventurers metro-ed home for some coffee and reclining chairs. In all, a very excellent day!

Fun With Books

The Rules: Pick up the nearest book of 123 pages or more. (No cheating!)
Find Page 123.
Find the first 5 sentences.
Post the next 3 sentences.
Tag 5 people.

From Emergence of a Free Press, Leonard W. Levy, Oxford University Press, 1985

"In effect, Timothy differed not at all from the writer in the American Weekly Mercury who advocated the utmost freedom of the press suject to a just regard for the laws.
in 1734 William Bradford's New York Gazette made the same point as Timothy in a conventional way. Punishing "the licentiousness of the press" did not diminish its freedom because, "Tis the abuse not the use of the press that is criminal and ought to be punished."9

9New York Gazette, Feb 4, 1734."

I tag: Wileyman, Ros, SarahS, Katie, The Nurse, and Nora!

If you want to know how I came to be reading this particular book, it is rather interesting. I have been trying to completed my tagging, but as all the books in my office are merely instruction manuals and none of them are 123 pages (as no one would stand to read that much instruction) I have been rather unsuccessful of later. Today I volunteered to mind the phones while the receptionist is at lunch. All the receptionists are gone on break, so some had to answer and I volunteered. I am stitting at JCKV's desk and noted that he left behind two of his books. Emergence was the one on top, so I considered it closer. The other is called Printers and Press Freedom. Both are ILLs. I believe that JKV is using the books for a paper, which is why they sound so dull. Just so you are not worried that I have been neglecting the phones while writing this, I have had no calls. Very slow day. Good for JCKV's paper. Good for me to get this tagging done. I do not know if it is good for the people I tagged.

Stress

I work in an environment which produces a fair bit of stress. Clients who are mad about being cheated out of their money, or worried about losing their kid, or concerned that ligitation will not be concluded in time to meet a contract deadline are all part of my day. I bleed off some stress by practicing Krav Maga.

I also deal with stress by philosophizing. See Here for an example...
